Kitting and assembly: top-down view of subscription box components staged for build

What Is Product Kitting?

Product kitting is the process of combining multiple individual SKUs into a single, shippable unit, also called a kit, bundle, or set. Instead of picking and shipping each component separately, kitting pre-assembles them so one order ships as one package. This reduces fulfillment time, improves unboxing experience, and allows you to sell bundled products at a higher perceived value.

At 3rd Party Fulfillment, kitting is managed through our warehouse management system (WMS) using a bill of materials (BOM). You define exactly which SKUs go into each kit, what packaging to use, and what inserts to include. Our system handles the rest, tracking inventory at both the component level and the assembled kit level, so your real-time stock counts are always accurate across every sales channel.

Kitting is ideal for eCommerce brands that sell bundled products, subscription box companies with monthly configurations, corporate gifting programs, retail chains building retail-ready display units, and brands running seasonal or promotional campaigns. We've been assembling kits since 2003 and have the floor space, labor, and systems to scale from 50 kits a month to tens of thousands.

Types of Kitting We Handle

BOM-Based Multi-SKU Kits

Define your bill of materials once. Our WMS reads the BOM and automatically stages components for assembly. Kit SKU is assigned and tracked independently from component inventory. Changes to kit configuration can be updated on the fly without manual intervention on your side.

Subscription Box Kitting

Monthly or recurring subscription boxes with variable configurations per billing period. We work with ReCharge, Skio, and other subscription platforms to sync orders ahead of fulfillment windows. Each month's BOM is submitted in advance, components staged, and boxes assembled on schedule.

Gift Sets & Seasonal Bundles

Holiday gift sets, corporate gifting programs, and seasonal bundles assembled with branded outer packaging, tissue, ribbon, and custom insert cards. We handle the physical assembly and can include personalized printed cards (produced in-house on our commercial press).

Promotional Kits

Campaign-specific kits for product launches, influencer mailers, trade show giveaways, and retail promotions. Contents and packaging vary per campaign. We assemble to spec, photograph for QA, and ship on your campaign timeline, with same-day capability for urgent drops.

Retail-Ready Display Packaging

Kits destined for retail shelves require specific retail-ready packaging (RRP) with hang tags, barcodes, shrink wrapping, and compliance labels. We build to retail specifications for big-box, specialty, and boutique retail buyers, including floor displays and counter displays.

Trade Show & Event Kits

Pre-packed event kits for conferences, trade shows, corporate events, and sales teams. Typically include printed materials, branded merchandise, product samples, and collateral, all sourced, assembled, and shipped to event venues or distributed by our team on your timeline.

Our 4-Step Kitting Process

Every kit we assemble follows a documented, repeatable process that eliminates errors and keeps your inventory accurate.

01
BOM Setup & Inventory Receipt

You share your kit BOM, SKUs, quantities, packaging specs, and insert requirements. We receive all components into our WMS, assign storage locations, and stage everything for assembly. Component and kit SKUs are linked in the system from day one.

02
Component Staging & QC

Before assembly begins, our team performs a component audit, verifying quantities, inspecting for damage, and confirming all inserts and packaging materials are on hand. Any discrepancies are flagged before a single kit is assembled, preventing downstream errors.

03
Assembly & Labeling

Kits are assembled per BOM on dedicated kitting stations. Each assembled unit is labeled with the kit SKU, barcode, and any required retail or compliance labels. Variable data (personalized names, order numbers, custom messages) can be applied at this stage. Assembled kits are scanned into inventory before moving to outbound.

04
Pick, Pack & Ship

Assembled kit SKUs live in our WMS alongside your other inventory. When orders come in through Shopify, Amazon, WooCommerce, or any connected channel, kits are picked and packed exactly like single-product orders, with same-day shipping available for orders placed before 2 pm EST. Tracking is synced back to your platform automatically.

Unique Differentiator

Print Your Inserts Here Too

Most 3PLs outsource printing, or make you source inserts yourself. We don't. Our in-house commercial printing operation means your product inserts, thank-you cards, instruction sheets, promo flyers, and custom packaging can be printed, assembled, and shipped from the same building. No vendor coordination. No lead time surprises. No mismatched inventory.

  • Custom insert cards & thank-you notes
  • Instruction sheets & warranty cards
  • Coupon & discount cards
  • Brochures & product catalogs
  • Branded tissue paper & stickers
  • Retail hang tags & shelf talkers

Kitting Platform Integrations

Your kitting workflow connects directly to your sales channels and subscription management platforms. When an order is placed, our WMS processes it automatically, no manual upload, no CSV import, no delay. Here are the platforms we integrate with most frequently for kitting operations:

Shopify & Shopify Plus

Full two-way sync. Kit SKUs live in Shopify exactly like regular products. Inventory levels update in real time as kits are assembled or shipped. Bundle apps like Bundler and Kite are also supported.

Amazon FBA & FBM

We can prepare Amazon-compliant kits for FBA inbound shipments (FNSKU labeling, poly bagging, bundling requirements) and fulfill Amazon FBM orders directly from our facility with Amazon-compliant packaging.

ReCharge & Skio

Native integration with the two leading subscription billing platforms. We pull billing cycles in advance, stage components, and run subscription box assembly on a defined fulfillment schedule, typically 5–10 days ahead of ship date.

WooCommerce

Direct WooCommerce integration through our order management middleware. Kit inventory syncs in real time, orders route to our WMS automatically, and tracking is pushed back to WooCommerce on ship confirmation.

BigCommerce & Wix eCommerce

Full integration for stores running on BigCommerce and Wix. Kit SKUs, inventory, and order routing all managed through our platform with the same real-time accuracy as our Shopify integration.

EDI & B2B Retailers

For brands selling kitted products to retail buyers via EDI, we handle compliant ASN generation, GS1-compliant labeling, and packing list creation. Retail-ready kits ship to DC or store locations meeting buyer specs exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions | Kitting & Assembly

You submit a bill of materials (BOM) that specifies exactly which SKUs go into each kit, in what quantities, with what packaging and inserts. We load this into our WMS and link your component SKUs to the assembled kit SKU. When you need more kits built, either on a scheduled basis or triggered by low-stock thresholds, we assemble to spec. You can update the BOM at any time through your account portal or by notifying your account manager.
Yes. Subscription box kitting is one of our most active service lines. We integrate directly with ReCharge and Skio so billing cycle data feeds into our system automatically. You submit each month's BOM 5–10 business days before your fulfillment window. We stage components, run the assembly, and ship within your fulfillment window. If configurations vary by subscriber tier, we handle each tier's BOM separately.
Kitting is quoted per assembled kit, based on the number of components, complexity of assembly, any special packaging or labeling, and estimated monthly volume. There is no minimum, we'll quote a small-batch run or a high-volume ongoing program equally. Submit a quote request above and we'll respond with a detailed pricing proposal within one business hour during business hours.
Yes, and this is one of our biggest differentiators. Our in-house commercial printing operation means you can have inserts, thank-you cards, instruction sheets, brochures, and promo flyers printed by us and included in your kits. You don't need to coordinate with a separate print vendor or ship printed materials to our warehouse. We print, assemble, and ship from the same facility.
Yes. We prepare Amazon-compliant kits for both FBA inbound shipments and FBM fulfillment. For FBA, this includes FNSKU labeling, poly bagging where required, suffocation warning labels, and multi-unit bundle compliance. For FBM, kits ship via our carrier network with Amazon-compliant packaging and tracking synced back to Seller Central.
We can source standard packaging supplies, corrugated boxes, mailers, tissue paper, void fill, poly bags, and basic packaging accessories. For branded or custom-printed packaging, we can produce it in-house (our print division handles custom boxes and labels) or work with your preferred vendor. For product components, we recommend you work with your existing suppliers who ship directly to our warehouse.
Turnaround depends on kit complexity, volume, and whether all components are already in our facility. Simple 2–3 component kits at moderate volumes (under 1,000 units) can typically be staged and assembled within 2–3 business days after receiving all components. Complex kits or high volumes require more lead time, discuss your timeline in your quote request and we'll confirm feasibility upfront.
